Esquimalt has a long and significant history, with a legacy of heritage buildings, historic sites, structures and cultural landscapes. Coast Salish Native people had inhabited the area for over 4, years before the arrival of European settlers. There has long been a village site near Ashe Head on the eastern shore of Esquimalt Harbour, where the Esquimalt Band makes its home today. The Songhees had lived on the west shore of Victoria Harbour prior to establishment of their nearby reserve in Establishing the new fort on the shore of Victoria Harbour, Douglas signed a series of treaties with local native people to acquire the area for the HBC, later establishing three farms to supply Fort Victoria and other HBC forts in the northwest with agricultural produce. The municipality of Esquimalt, incorporated in , has many heritage buildings and beaches with excellent views of Victoria Harbour and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Essentially one large peninsula, Esquimalt is bounded on the south by the Strait of Juan de Fuca, on the west by Esquimalt Harbour, and on the north by a long fingerlike inlet of tidal water called the Gorge. The natural harbour occupied by CFB Esquimalt supports the ships of the Canadian Pacific Fleet, with military service personnel and civilians working onboard ships or at the base. Add to this their families, and it can be seen that there is a considerable military community in the Victoria region.

New sea level curves for the last 15, years for the Pacific coast of Canada. Abstract Post-glacial sea level dynamics during the last 15, calendar years are highly variable along the Pacific coast of Canada. Between these inner and outer coasts, we hypothesize that there would have been an area where sea level remained relatively stable, despite regional and global trends in sea level change.
To address this hypothesis, we use pond basin coring, diatom analysis, archaeological site testing, sedimentary exposure sampling, and radiocarbon dating to construct sea level histories for the Hakai Passage region.

The food came to them, eliminating the need to migrate to follow herds, so their houses were large permanent structures, often facing outward to the ocean, the food source and avenue of transportation. This ease of survival ensured the people had enough leisure time to develop richly complex art forms. Today, the First Nations people of Vancouver Island tell their stories through cultural presentations, art, adventure experiences, and interpretive centers.
Whether telling the stories of the Potlatch reclaimed, proudly showing totem poles, displaying the works of world class artists in local galleries, performing stories in dance, hosting guests in their own resort, or taking them on canoe rides, the First Nations of Vancouver Island have many stories to tell and many experiences to share.

Every year the United Nations declares Canada to be the best place in the world to live. But no one ever says exactly what part of Canada. Winnipeg during mosquito season? Ottawa during Question Period? We don’t think so. In the interests of clarity and controversy , we’d like to propose that the honour belongs to BC. As evidence we present this list of of the best things about living here, things that make us stick out our chests with pride.
Things like Nanaimo bars, and Kermode bears, and Triple O sauce. Things that contain the flavour of life west of the Rockies. Everyone has their own reasons for appreciating the province. For the sake of argument any list of the best things about BC had better start with those words! During the time we worked on the EBC we were reminded every day of a new “best thing” about BC, so it was a challenge to pick an even and call them the best.
What do you think? We’re ready for all the second guessing—in fact, we invite it.

It’s history is intriguing. The Imo, a Norwegian ship, was behind schedule and in a hurry to leave. The Mont-Blanc, a French munitions ship, had arrived from New York the day before but was held back having arrived too late to pass through the submarine nets. Allowed through the next morning, the Mont Blanc was not flying the mandated red flag to identify it was carrying highly combustible materials: In those days ships in the inner harbour were known to sometimes pass each other on the wrong side.
Of course had the Imo known what deadly cargo the Mont Blanc was carrying it is unlikely it would have pressed to pass the Mont Blanc on the wrong side even though the Mont Blanc had signalled back that it was not changing course. There was a collision and an uncontainable fire broke out on the Mont Blanc. Panicked, the Mont Blanc captain and crew abandoned ship in a rowboat to a nearby island leaving the vessel to drift. As the burning ship slowly crept toward the downtown area a crowd gathered at the harbourfront enjoying the unusual spectacle.

In all likelihood both men were searching for a safe route for fur brigades from Kamloops and Fort Langley , for a route to bypass the lower Fraser River canyons. In , Alexander Caulfield Anderson travelled through this country with the same purpose: By then, as of the Oregon Treaty , the lower Columbia River , the main link with the Interior , was American, and for that reason Governor Simpson considered a new route “most highly important.
Seton Lake was named for an officer named Alexander Seton, a relative of A. The exploration party continued by what Anderson described as a “very good trail,” and camped overnight at the Birkenhead River. The next day, following the Birkenhead River, they reached Mount Currie area by late afternoon. The gold rush era[ edit ] In the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush began and some 30, miners began the trek through traditional Lil’wat and upper St’at’imc territory to the goldfields at Lillooet , then known as Cayoosh Flat.
Many miners who reached the goldfields in the summer of intended to stay the winter and this created an urgent problem for Governor Douglas of Vancouver Island. The miners needed food and that food had to be transported to regions above the lower canyons of the Fraser, where there were no roads. Because he knew that twelve years earlier A. Anderson had traveled from Lillooet by a chain of lakes to Fort Langley , Governor James Douglas asked for a survey a route linking all lakes between the north end of Harrison Lake and the Fraser River.
The total length of trail would be just over sixty-eight miles, the total length of all lakes nearly fifty-six miles. Those who were here first[ edit ] The Pemberton Valley lies in the traditional territory of Lil’wat Nation who have lived on these lands for thousands of years. Potatoes have been grown in the Pemberton Valley since the earliest days.
